Walking With Chameleons
is a new book of circular walks by Geoff Fryatt, the author
of Rambling Around in Historic Cyprus, which is the
top-selling book for ramblers who enjoy the freedom and the
fresh air of this lovely island. Geoff has been busy doing
more market research by listening to comments from his
readers, many of whom asked if there was a set of shorter
and easier walks that would be ideal for families with
younger children and often for older folks too? This
encouraged him to research and publish a new brightly
coloured and easy to follow book of circular walks, each
showing a map of the route and a description of local
features and places of interest along the Aphrodite
Coastline between Mandria and Akrotiri.
The book is tailored to suit members of
the family of all ages, from schoolchildren
to OAPs (Older Active Persons)
who fancy going for a stroll,
perhaps taking the dog along?
Each of the 19 walks is about
5kms (3 miles) in length and would take most people less
than 2 hours to cover. The important thing to note is that
the walks are generally flat, and where Cyprus does gets a
bit bumpy, the going is gentle - and who is in a rush
anyway? Chameleons are fascinating creatures who take their
time moving along, always looking around and studying their
environment, and they stay quiet too.
To keep the youngsters
interested, half the walks include a hidden treasure trove
that can be found after they have decoded a simple clue,
along the lines of the popular geocaching system. No
electronics involved, however, just imagination and a touch
of Sherlock Holmes logic. The treasure troves are hidden
under rocks or where the clue tells you to search, and all
are in a weather-proof screw-top container with small bits
and bobs inside, including a notebook and pencil. Using the
photos and the clues in the book, you track down the
treasure and you take something out and you put something
else in its place - small toys, key fob, badges, the sort of
items you get in a Christmas cracker for example. You enter
your name, or a nickname if you prefer, and the date of your
visit in the notebook and say what you have taken and what
you have put in its place. That keeps the fun rolling for
whoever comes a-hunting for the treasure next! The contact
details of several recommended tavernas are listed along the
routes so walkers can stock up on calories and refreshments
whenever they wish. |
